Richard Liu Qiangdong’s Journey To One Of The Richest Men In China

The journey to riches isn’t an easy one, and Richard Liu Qiangdong knows that all too well. As the founder of Chinese e-commerce giant, he’s been one of the richest men in China for several years. However, Richard Liu’s career got off to somewhat of a rocky start. The eventual retail founder first studied at the People’s University of China and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. However, he soon realized that this wouldn’t be a career path that he would enjoy. As such, he began searching for a viable alternative and eventually decided on Computer Science, which led to him working as a Coder on a freelance basis.

With this knowledge and experience, Richard Liu Qiangdong began working for Japan Life and worked his way up the nutritional provider’s corporate ladder relatively quickly. This resulted in Richard Liu eventually becoming Director of Computers with the company. This success was short-lived, however, as he soon began yearning to set up his own business. As a result, he and Japan Life parted ways, and he founded Jingdong, a small store located in central Beijing. Despite the relatively limited range of products on offer, the company soon began to thrive. The primary force behind this was Richard Liu Qiangdong’s focus on providing quality customer service.

As a result, Jingdong quickly expanded to have over a dozen stores in Beijing. However, a considerable challenge came in the form of a SARS outbreak in the country. This led to contact with customers becoming increasingly difficult, which forced Richard Liu Qiangdong to reconsider his business strategy. As a result, he soon established and began focusing more and more on the company’s online products. While this wasn’t something that was initially planned, it was quite successful and began generating the majority of Jingdong’s revenue.

As’s popularity began to grow across China, so too did interest from product developers. This led to Richard Liu Qiangdong establishing partnerships between the e-commerce company and a variety of manufacturers. With this growth in product portfolio, saw an explosion in popularity across the country, leading to the brand becoming the largest such platform in the country.
