James Dondero: A Veteran of Hedge Fund Management with a Philanthropic Heart
Philanthropy and entrepreneurship occupy both ends of financial spectrum. Philanthropy calls for financial expenditure in support of various causes while entrepreneurship aims at generation of finance through investment. Despite these discordant financial objectives, philanthropy relies heavily on entrepreneurs to support their various causes both financial and morally. One such entrepreneur with a philanthropic heart is James Dondero: a Dallas, Texas-based veteran hedge fund manager. The co-founder and current president of Highland Capital Management LP announced in October 2016 that the company will donate $1 million to help The Family Place reach its $$16.5 million target for its Legacy Campaign. Donated as a challenge grant, the donation by Highland Capital Management LP will help the charity organization’s efforts towards helping victims of family violence. The funds collected will be used in building emergency shelter for over 2,000 victims annually, a shelter for their pets and a center catering for growth and development of children. In addition, The Family Place will use the funds to fund the construction of a center dedicated to annually educating over 6,000 teens who are vulnerable to bullying and dating violence.
James Dondero has over three decades of experience in the hedge fund management and investment industry. Over the years, he has carved a name for himself as a topnotch portfolio manager with an excellent track record of swinging the performance of various portfolios and companies from obscurity to big performance. He first made forays into the industry in 1984 when he joined the Morgan Guaranty training initiative as an analyst before joining American Express in 1985 as a corporate bond analyst. Mr. Dondero later served the company as a portfolio manager up to 1989 before being hired as a chief investment officer at the newly founded Protective Life. Before leaving the company in 1993, he had helped it raise over $2 billion in capital. He later cofounded Highland Capital Management. He is currently serving as a board member for several companies.
